Accuracy of traditional 'virginity testing' and impact of its type I and type II errors
on the death toll of HIV and other STIs epidemics
By their very nature, the South African and Swazi local goddess of rain Nomkhubulwane rites which are conducted by traditional healers ( Zulu: izangoma, Xhosa: amagqirha ) and labelled as 'virginity testing', definitely have nothing to do with professional medical examination meeting the specific evidence based medicine criteria.Dr Halat's arguments against non-professional virginity testing here .
The type I and type II errors are unavoidable.
False positives on 'virginity testing' fulfill the medical criteria of type I errors, i. e. tested virgin in spite of having had coitus at least once [main reasons: (a) elasticity of the hymen (certain types) i. e. the hymen regains its shape after inserting a penis, (b) healed hymen tear - post-coital healing of the hymen with no or hardly detectable scarring, (c) anatomical abnormalities of the vulva, (d) diseases of the vulva including sexually transmitted diseases and other infections, (e) constriction of the perineal muscles (voluntary or unconscious) visibly bringing the torn tissue together, (f) induced vaginal tightness; see:

For the ones tested as virgins in spite of being ex-virgins, false positives on 'virginity testing' supply the certified evidence of the inefficacy of the system that is supposed to support virginity, and in fact encourage the spread of the promiscuity and rape culture. The rapists and their victims, their peers and whole communities get a guarantee stamp that the truth will never be uncovered.

Centre for the Study of Violence and ReconciliationFigure 3 shows the distribution by age of the rape survivors in our sample. The precise age of the survivor was not recorded for 56 of the 2 068 cases, with it being impossible to determine in 22 of these cases whether the victim was a girl, teenager, or adult. Where age could be determined, analysis showed that victims ranged from 1 year to 89 years in age, with the median age being 20 years (average 21.8). Thus, women aged 18 years and older comprised the majority of rape victims in our sample (60.2%). Of the rapes involving children 17 years and younger, teenage girls faced the greater risk, with 25.2% of girl victims being between the ages of 12 – 17. Baby and toddler rape has attracted considerable public concern and was identified in our sample. Four victims (0.2%) were aged a year or less, another 19 were two years old (0.9%) and 35 were three years old (1.7%). In total, victims aged three years and younger accounted for 2.8% of all victims in our study where an age could be determined. In just over half of these cases (58%) there were genital or anal injuries. here
