Dr Ben Dlamini, Swazi traditionalist, reminds a group of adolescent girls about announcements in the media encouraging the Reed Dance participants to take condoms to the ceremony and to interrupt the rape and hand the rapist a condom. This idea is ridiculed by a girl which had been many times raped in the bush. Dr Dlamini assesses "of 30,000 girls participating 5,000 would be raped, and that means that the all remaining would not necessarily catch AIDS." ocal female adolescents say in isiZulu: Hardly any of participants of the Reed Dance is still a virgin … ..virgin child girls may be found at kindergarten only.

This doom-propheting Reed Dance participant said in isiZulu: "We shall all die of AIDS not knowing who has infected us, like those reeds which do not know who cut them off.

How many of the 2000 Reed Dancers are still alive?

A clarion call for greater openness had already been sounded by South African President Thabo Mbeki. "For too long we have closed our eyes as a nation, hoping the truth was not so real," the then Deputy President Mbeki told South Africans in 1998. "For many years, we have allowed the HIV virus to spread... [and now] we face the danger that half of our youth will not reach adulthood. Their education will be wasted. The economy will shrink. There will be a large number of sick people whom the healthy will not be able to maintain. Our dreams as a people will be shattered."
